Default Download Client Trouble - another (apparantly) lacking connection

Okay, so I haven't bought the game yet. I'm planning to buy Nightfall, but since PlayOnline didn't work (I was going to buy FFXI, but the Vista version PlayOnline wouldn't work - apparantly, there is no connection) I thought I'd best check it out first. So, I downloaded the client, unzipped it, and the original screen came up. The bar (apparantly, thinner than normal and without percentage annotations) began to move across, yet it stopped at a certain point (near the end) and wouldn't move any further. I've tried changing firewall settings to allow it, but it won't budge. I even tried disabling my firewall while trying this, but to no avail.

I have a Netgear DG834 wireless router (although it's connected to the computer through an ethernet cable), and I've heard of problems with this sort of thing before, but never really understood what the hell anybody was talking about (I'm new to computing, so please explain any responses in Lehman's terms). I really have no idea. Help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

NB: As to why I am creating a new topic when I've seen others that try and resolve poor Netgear issues, I didn't understand any of it/it didn't solve my problems. Sorry if I caused any problems with this.

Aight basically this may be a problem: You started installing the game..and you have 1.5gb of space on your hard-drive. And the game is 2gb (for instance) then it's installing the 1.5gb it can fit on your HDD. And the rest won't install as it's impossible. This should show an error message...but it may not do.

Check your HDD, and either remove some stuff so it will fit GW (ideally with space on top of that as well so you can use your HDD as spare RAM if need be)

Right click your HDD in "My Computer", scroll down to "properties" Check how much is spare and how much is full. Then compare it wit the GW file (should say reccomended spare HDD space somewhere on the site, if not i can provide it if you want.)

Okay, I have 106GB. free. I doubt the game would take up that much space. Thanks for trying, anyway. But I'm guessing it's something to do with either my internet connection or my router settings.

EDIT: Apparantly, the client is 102GB.

Heh, the client is NOT 102gb... 102GB is the equivalent of about 80 or so films. The client is about 4GB.

Beats me mate, try resetting the router or something.

I've tried that (I hope that by resetting, you mean taking the lead out and putting it back in aga - somebody else told me to do that, and called it "resetting"). Thanks anyway, it's appreciated.

Maybe you should try updating networkcard drivers, i've had problems download/caching stuff because of old drivers.

The client is actually way less than 4 GB. About 103k zipped. The .dat file is around 4 GB, which at this point, hasn't even been downloaded yet.

@ OP: What operating system are you using? Once we have that down, we can guide you through more steps.

What are your other system specs? Dual core processor?

And I am assuming you are running Vista?

If you haven't done so yet, check out this page and get the latest firmware update for the "version" of your router. (The version number should be next to the model number on the router

Whenever I start having problems, a new firmware usually fixes it. All the information you need for that portion is there.


Some other things (Assuming you are using Vista):

Are you running the client as Admin?

Is the folder you are installing to a shared folder? (For some reason, at least here on my Vista system, when I am moving things to the shared folder, it takes a looooooong time.)

My responses are emboldened (by the by, thank you for your help, everyone).

EDIT: My router is a Netgear DG834PN, and I am with Vista (unfortunately).

Hmmm...

For your router, this is the page the firmware is at. Latest firmware update was 1/28/08 (so that may be the issue).

Although it does say "not for North America or Germany", so if you are in either of those areas I have no idea if it will work or not, i wouldn't risk it without calling Netgear. Well... I would, but then i again i live on the edge /flex

EDIT:
I just saw the "Vista Compatibility Issues" button, so I suggest you go to that page.

From here go down and find your router model number, there is a download that is seperate from the firmware that is needed for your router on Vista.

Heh. I live in England, so I should be fine. Thank you. I'm all for downloading it, but beforehand I'd like to know if there are any risks i.e. unexpected explosion of computers, inability to connect to the internet, etc.

There are always risks of that, i'm afraid.

Grab the recovery tool (that same page) and make sure you download the instructions before you do it

And if you feel uncomfortable doing it, call netgear support, and they will walk you through it. There is never any shame is calling a free help service when your unsure.

The instructions make very little sense, so I'll just download the firmware and THEN telephone Netgear (tomorrow). Thank you.

Because the firmware is not a Windows file. You generally download a .bin file or a .zip that contains the .bin file which holds the data for the router.

You need to log into your router and find the administrative section. From there you update/upgrade by browsing to the firmware file you downloaded.

Since you have a Netgear router (bleh, they're known to be horrible!) you can view this page:

Thanks... but how exactly do I login?

EDIT: After trying the client again, and leaving it alone for 20 minutes, the bar moved (but ended up back at the same point - so it probably moved backwards for some reason >>).

Ok, so you need to log into your router to apply the firmware upgrades.

Open Internet Explorer and type in this address in the address bar http://192.168.0.1. That should take you to a login screen, or may take you directly into the router. If it takes you to a login screen and asks for a username and password, try Administrator for the username, and nothing for the password (type in Administrator in the username and just hit enter).

If that works, you should now be logged into the router. I don't remember the layout of Netgear's menus, but there should be a tab or something that talks about firmware upgrades. From there you can point to the upgrade file. It should give you on screen instructions on how to do this, as most routers are pretty user friendly about doing it.

The last Netgear I upgraded was, at least.

Ah, thanks. I managed to upgrade my router's firmware, but to no avail with my client situation. Are there any specific router settings that it has to be on to run GW/the GW client? Such as a certain channel, or (if anybody knows how to with my DG834PN) port triggering/forwarding?
